Instagram stories carry an invisible event when you open them inside the official app — your account is added to the poster's Seen-by tray within seconds. Anonymous viewers break that link by fetching the story on the server side instead of from your phone.

What “anonymous” actually means here

When a story loads through this viewer the request leaves our backend, not your browser session. Instagram has nothing to attach the view to — no account ID, no token, no cookie.

Why you don't need a login

Every public Instagram profile is reachable from open endpoints that don't require an authenticated session. The viewer talks to those endpoints directly and discards the connection.

Why this only works on public accounts

Private profiles are gated at Instagram's server — the platform checks whether a token belongs to an approved follower before serving any media. No third-party tool can bypass that check.

What does not get stored

Your IP isn't logged, the username you searched isn't logged, the stories returned aren't kept. The viewer is a passthrough — request comes in, fetch happens, media is rendered, connection closes.
